End of the road: Thailand tightens up rules on foreign tourist vehicles

Thailand is tightening up rules on foreign tourists bringing vehicles into the country to cut down on the number of foreign vehicles on the roads.
The Land Transport Department will ban foreign tourists driving motorbikes and motor homes into the country as it seeks to enforce order, the reported.
Tourists wanting to drive cars into Thailand will have to apply for permission through Thai tourism operators at least 10 days in advance of their trips.
This will affect the many tourists from China, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam who make the journey to Thailand by road.
However these regulations will not apply to vehicles from Laos, Malaysia and Singapore as Thailand has pacts with these countries on international car travel.
Once foreign drivers are granted permission to drive into Thailand, they must display a card costing THB500 in their vehicles, and they will only be allowed on Thai roads for 30 days per trip.
They cannot spend more than 60 days in one year driving in Thailand, the Land Transport Department added.
The department will also share details on foreign vehicles with other state agencies, allowing customs officials to closely monitor the foreign vehicles and check whether they are overstaying.
